Number of people with disabilities in federal government rises to 1.44 per cent
The number of people with disabilities employed by the federal government has risen to 1.44 per cent, reported Petra De Sutter, minister of the civil service, and Karine Lalieux, minister for people with disabilities. The target remains 3 per cent.
The rate is up slightly from 1.09 per cent the previous year. Since then, the government has taken a number of initiatives. There are now job vacancies specifically for people with disabilities and an introductory path has been developed that can lead to a permanent job. In addition, people with disabilities can now receive an allowance if they use a car to get to work.
De Sutter wants to make the heads of the federal public services aware of these measures. "These government departments have started to work on this themselves," she said. "I asked each of them to draw up an action plan. They went to trade fairs, organised special recruitment campaigns, adapted workplaces and so on."
