Number of people with dementia to rise by 40 per cent in Flanders and Brussels by 2040

An estimated 152,000 people live with dementia in Flanders and Brussels. By 2040, that figure is expected to rise to 210,000, an increase of 40 per cent. The projection comes from the latest prevalence data published by the Flanders Dementia Expertise Centre.
The rise in dementia cases is primarily linked to an ageing population. Dementia affects more than one in ten people over 65, more than one in five people over 80 and as many as four in ten people over 90.
The sharpest growth is expected in Limburg, the Northern Kempen region and along the coast. In larger cities, the increase will be slower due to younger demographics, though the figures remain striking: a 32 per cent rise in Antwerp and 38 per cent in Ghent.
To mark World Alzheimer’s Day on Sunday, 21 September, the Flanders Dementia Expertise Centre is launching the “2 for the price of 1” campaign, centred on the message: “What’s good for your heart is good for your brain.” The campaign encourages people to adopt a brain-healthy lifestyle.
