Number of diabetes treatments continues to rise in Flanders
More and more Flemings are being treated for diabetes, according to figures published on Friday by Statistics Flanders. In 2012, 50 out of every 1,000 Flemish people were being treated, compared to 64 out of every 1,000 in 2022.
The figures also show that more men (69 per 1,000) than women (59 per 1,000) are being treated for diabetes. The increase in the number of people with diabetes since 2009 has mainly been among men. There has also been an increase among women, but it has been much smaller.
The proportion of diabetes treatments also increases with age. In 2022, 200 people per 1,000 were being treated for diabetes in the age group 75 years and older, compared with 4 per 1,000 in the group up to 24 years of age.
More diabetics in Wallonia
The Walloon region is the outlier in Belgium: more people were treated for diabetes in 2022 in Wallonia (86 per 1,000 inhabitants) than in the other two regions. In the Flemish Region and the Brussels-Capital Region, 64 and 63 per 1,000 inhabitants respectively were treated for the disease.
Statistics Flanders used data from the health insurance funds. The figures include people taking medication to treat diabetes, having a diabetes convention, a follow-up or being included in a care pathway. They do not distinguish by type of diabetes. People who take medication but do not have diabetes are also included in the figures.
