Number of active X users in Belgium fell by nearly 9 per cent in second half 2025

The number of monthly active users of X in Belgium fell by 8.8 per cent in the last six months of 2025. That show figures from social media expert Xavier Degraux, based on the transparency reports released by the social network under the European Digital Services Act (DSA).

At the end of December 2025, the social network X – formerly known as Twitter and celebrating its 20th anniversary this year – had 1,691,159 monthly active users in Belgium. That is 162,505 fewer than at the end of June. At its peak, the platform had nearly 2.3 million active users in Belgium.

However, the decline is less pronounced than in several neighbouring countries. In France, X lost 12.5 per cent of its monthly users during the same period, and in Germany as much as 16.6 per cent, according to Belgian social media expert Xavier Degraux.

In total, the platform lost around 15 per cent of its active users in Europe during the second half of 2025. As a result, the number of monthly users stood at 64.77 million by the end of the year.

According to Degraux, this decline is part of a trend that has been ongoing since Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter at the end of 2022. “Many opinion leaders are leaving the platform because they no longer agree with the billionaire’s views.” In Belgium, he adds, several Flemish media outlets have followed suit, whilst French-speaking players have generally tended to stay on.
