Nude bike parade in Brussels exposes benefits and dangers of cycling
More than 100 cyclists took part in a nude bike ride through Brussels on Saturday afternoon in the 20th edition of Cyclonudista. The event calls for better safety and infrastructure for cyclists, promotes the environmental benefits of cycling and defends bodily freedom.
“In recent years, there has been some improvement in terms of facilities for cyclists, but we can see that they are located where it is easy, and not necessarily where they are most needed and where it is most dangerous for cyclists,” said the organiser of the campaign, Jérôme Jolibois.
He is calling on public authorities to install more cycle lanes on Brussels’ main roads, particularly the most dangerous.
The nudity of the participants is intended to symbolise the vulnerability of cyclists to motor traffic and is intended more broadly to promote body positivity. Jolibois: “Being naked doesn’t hurt anyone, unlike car pollution.”
Advocating the transition to cycling as an essential mobility solution, the organisers say cycling improves the quality of life for all.
Cycling rather than driving where possible improves air quality, reduces noise, increases road safety in cities and is an ally in the fight against a sedentary lifestyle and a key factor in good health, they say.
