Northern Lights visible in Belgian skies

The Northern Lights were visible above Belgium on Monday night, the result of a powerful solar storm. Photos shared on social media show bright green and pink streaks of light in the sky.
Shortly before 23:00, former weather presenter Frank Deboosere posted on X that the aurora borealis was visible. The phenomenon lasted until around midnight and was visible in large parts of the country.
“A solar storm was predicted, but the strength of that storm took us by surprise,” space weather expert Christine Verbeke told VRT. “The conditions of this particular solar storm are not ideal for strong auroras as far as Belgium, but because the solar storm is so powerful, it is still very visible.”
The northern lights occur when electrically charged particles from the sun enter the atmosphere via the north or south pole. These particles are hurled into space during high solar activity.
