North Sea Port introduces digital access system Port Pass

Ghent-based scale-up Peripass has launched Port Pass, a new digital identity and access platform designed to manage access control at North Sea Port. The rollout will begin at the end of March across 21 terminals operating in the port. From that point on, anyone seeking access will be required to register.

Port Pass replaces a patchwork of fragmented and often outdated procedures with a single, uniform digital standard for all terminal visitors and port companies. The platform aims to improve security, efficiency and compliance with increasingly strict legislation, particularly in the fight against drug smuggling and organised crime.

"At the moment, it is extremely difficult to know exactly who is entering a site and who should not be there," explained Matti Desmet, co-founder of Port Pass. "We solve that through a single digital identity platform, without slowing down port operations. That is crucial, because delays at a counter are no longer an option today."

Port Pass applies to all types of visitors, including drivers, suppliers and crew members. Registration takes place digitally via smartphone or laptop and combines pre-registration, biometric identity checks and real-time verification against port bans. Once approved, users receive clear instructions on where and when they are authorised to enter.

The platform was developed specifically for International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) requirements, which are laid down in Belgium's Maritime Security Act, its Shipping Code and relevant European regulations. Digital and automated solutions are increasingly seen as essential to meeting these higher security standards.

"Digital and biometric access control not only improves security, but also simplifies daily operations in the port," said Annelies Verlinden, federal minister for Justice and responsible for the North Sea. "It shows how cooperation between government, port companies and technology partners can lead to greater safety and efficiency on the ground."

Peripass developed Port Pass in collaboration with North Sea Port and seven founding customers from the port community. The company intends to roll out the system in other ports at a later stage.
