No deal yet on new Flemish government
Senior politicians of the three political parties negotiating the formation of a new government for the Flemish region did not reach a deal during negotiations on Thursday night. Negotiations will continue on Friday.
It’s expected that Flemish nationalists N-VA, socialists Vooruit and Christian democrats CD&V will reach a deal on Friday, or in the night of Friday to Saturday at the latest. On Saturday and Sunday, the members of the three parties should approve the detailed programme of the new government, presided by minister president Matthias Diependaele of N-VA. The names of all new ministers should be known by the end of the weekend.
On Monday, they should make their formal start, in the Flemish parliament, where the government will present its budget and other plans.
A new federal government should not be expected for many weeks. Negotiations will restart after the local elections on 13 October. Negotiations over billions of euros in budget cuts will take weeks.
