Nine injured in tram crash on Antwerp’s Left Bank

Nine people were injured after two trams collided on Antwerp’s Left Bank on Tuesday morning. The crash happened around 8.30am near Halewijnlaan, as the trams were leaving the pre-metro tunnel.

The accident involved trams on lines 5 and 9, which were both travelling towards Zwijndrecht. Police said it was a rear-end collision. Seven passengers and both drivers were injured. One driver was seriously hurt, but no one is in life-threatening condition.

Emergency services attended the scene in large numbers, and a medical response plan was put in place. Four trams were evacuated underground, and replacement buses are being used to carry passengers.

Tram services on lines 3, 5, 9 and 15 are heavily disrupted in both directions. There is no impact on car traffic.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
