Nina Derwael wins second gold on the beam at European Championships

Nina Derwael claimed her second gold medal in two days at the European Gymnastics Championships in Leipzig, Germany, by winning the balance beam final on Saturday. The gymnast from Limburg had already won gold in the uneven bars event on Friday evening.
Derwael performed a faultless routine, earning a score of 14.033. In the qualifying round, she had ranked sixth with a score of 13.466.
In the final, she outperformed Romania’s Ana Barbosu (13.666) and Italy’s Sofia Tonelli (13.633). Jennifer Williams of Sweden, who had topped the qualifiers with 14.533, made several mistakes and finished sixth with a score of 12.533. Manila Esposito of Italy, who had scored 14.300 in the qualifiers, fell during her routine and finished seventh with 12.200.
World class
The 25-year-old Derwael had previously won silver on the beam at the 2018 European Championships in Glasgow and gold at the 2019 European Games in Minsk. Her uneven bars title this week was her third European gold on that apparatus (after 2017 and 2018). She now holds four European titles, in addition to two world titles (2018, 2019) and an Olympic gold (2021), all on the uneven bars.
The Belgian delegation concludes the Leipzig championships with three medals, including a bronze on vault for Lisa Vaelen.
