Next car 'definitely not' electric for 22 per cent of Belgians
A survey commissioned by insurer Europ Assistance shows that 22 per cent of Belgians will "definitely not" be choosing an electric car for their next vehicle purchase.
Compared to last year, however, more people say their next car will definitely or probably be electric. A year ago, 41 per cent said yes, compared to 48 per cent today.
Older people living further from a city are the most reluctant. Young city dwellers are the easiest to persuade to buy an electric car, says Europ Assistance. However, the price of the car remains the biggest obstacle.
The survey was conducted online between 13 and 22 December among 1,004 people living in Belgium.
A similar survey carried out by BNP Paribas Fortis earlier this year suggested that the Belgian population's appetite for electric cars appeared to be waning. In January, 42 per cent of households said they would never switch to an electric or hybrid vehicle. Some 37 per cent said they would switch to an electric or hybrid car by 2029, compared to 47 per cent a year earlier.
Premium for EVs
Last year, only 35 per cent said they would never make the switch, although the rising percentage (+7 per cent) can be partly explained by the fact that many early adopters have now bought their electric car.
Last month, the number of registrations of new and used electric cars by private individuals in Belgium more than doubled compared to the same month last year. The increase was mainly due to the Flemish premium for electric cars.
