New speed pedelec sales drop as second-hand market sees record year
After a few record years, the market for new high-speed electric bikes slowed in 2024, mobility federation Traxio reports. The second-hand market, meanwhile, continues to grow.
Last year, 12,935 new speed pedelecs were sold in Belgium, down 17.5 per cent on 2023, or a decrease of 2,737. A total of 8,050 second-hand units were registered, an increase of 18.3 per cent or 1,245 units.
Speed pedelecs are legally classified as mopeds. Like other electric bikes, they provide pedalling assistance using a motor. Unlike electric bikes, whose speed is limited to 25 km/h, they can travel at up to 45 km/h.
"The question is whether the increase in leasing will compensate for the decline among private and business customers"
The sector as a whole has had a difficult year, but the outlook remains positive, Traxio says. Teaching staff in particular are expected to account for a large proportion of future customers, as they are now eligible for bike leasing through their employers.
The leasing segment represents 50.9 per cent of the market. “The question is whether the increase in leasing will be able to compensate for the decline among private and business customers in the future,” Traxio says. “We think it will, not least thanks to the increased availability of bike leasing via employers.”
