New Zeebrugge-Germany rail link removes 11,000 lorries a year from roads
Rail freight company Lineas and transport company ECS have launched a new rail link between Zeebrugge and Crailsheim, near Stuttgart, in Germany.
The service, operating three times a week, is expected to significantly reduce road traffic by eliminating the need for more than 11,000 trucks a year. This will also contribute to a substantial decrease in CO2 emissions, cutting approximately 2,600 tonnes each year.
Each train on the route will carry 42 containers per trip, enhancing the efficiency of freight transport between the two regions. The link is designed to integrate with existing rail and shipping connections in Zeebrugge, including those to the UK and Ireland.
A key feature of the service is a new loading and unloading method, where the entire set of carriages is exchanged with pre-loaded ones, minimising loading time and ensuring that the 751km route can be covered within 24 hours, "with minimal loss of time and high punctuality compared to congestion-sensitive road transport", the companies said.
