New photos released to mark Queen Mathilde’s birthday

The Palace has released new photos of Queen Mathilde as she celebrates her 53rd birthday. The pictures were taken during a state visit to Chile last June.

It was announced last week that Mathilde would be leading Belgium’s foreign economic missions, after Princess Astrid stepped back for health reasons. She will take over the role temporarily until her daughter, Crown Princess Elisabeth, is ready to assume the position.

Mathilde d’Udekem d’Acoz was born in Uccle on 20 January 1973 to Patrick d’Udekem d'Acoz and Anne Komorowski. She married Prince Philippe in 1999, aged 26. They had met three years earlier. Philippe ascended to the throne in 2013, on Belgium’s national holiday, following the abdication of his father, King Albert II.
