The number of new coronavirus infections rose to an average of 5,518 per day between June 25 and July 1. That is an increase of 44 percent compared to a week earlier, according to figures from the health institute Sciensano this Tuesday morning. From now on, the figures on the Sciensano dashboard will only be updated on Tuesdays and Fridays.
The number of hospital admissions continues to increase, but the increase is less sharp. Over the past seven days, an average of 119.0 people a day have been hospitalized with the coronavirus. Compared to the previous week, this is an increase of 17 percent.
The number of patients in intensive care remains stable. In total, there are now 1,526 corona patients in Belgian hospitals (+18 percent). The number of patients in intensive care has remained stable at 73. The number of deaths increased by 67% to an average of 8 people per day.
The reproduction number, which represents the speed at which the virus spreads, does fall (-6 pc), to 1.11. If the number is higher than 1, it means that the pandemic is fueling.
