National strike on Tuesday: Brussels Airport cancels half of incoming flights

Around half of all incoming flights to Brussels Airport on Tuesday have been cancelled due to a national strike. All departing flights had been cancelled by the airport earlier as well.

Trade unions are planning a national strike against the government's austerity measures for Tuesday, 14 October. Many services in Belgium are expected to be severely disrupted, including air traffic.

Brussels Airport will cancel a total of 115 of its 238 scheduled arrivals, airport spokesperson Jeffrey Franssens said on Monday.

48,000 passengers affected

Two weeks ago, the airport announced that all 234 departing flights would be cancelled due to a planned strike by "a large number" of G4S security guards.

A total of 48,000 passengers will be affected. Public transport throughout the country will also be severely disrupted.

Trade unions said on Monday that they expect a large turnout for their demonstration in Brussels on Tuesday. "We want to send a strong signal," said ACLVB spokesperson Kurt Van Hissenhoven.
