Every day, 23 private jets land or take off at the three Flemish regional airports, according to De Zondag. In Antwerp, they account for 16 per cent of flight movements.
De Zondag based its figures on data requested by Flemish MP Bogdan Vanden Berghe (Groen) from Flemish minister for mobility Annick De Ridder (N-VA).
Antwerp Regional Airport recorded 5,214 private jet movements last year. Ostend-Bruges recorded 1,127, while Kortrijk-Wevelgem recorded 2,192.
Millions in subsidies
"Last year, subsidies for regional airports already amounted to 14 million euros," said Vanden Berghe. 'With minister De Ridder's integrated investment plan, at least another 25 million euros will be added over the next three years."
"Without this tax money, this airport would already be bankrupt"
Of this, 15 million euros will go directly to Antwerp Airport. "Without this tax money, this airport would already be bankrupt," said Vanden Berghe.
He added that in four hours, a millionaire emits about as much CO₂ with their private jet as the average person in the European Union does in a whole year.
