Mobility Week: De Lijn gives free transport tickets for car parking in Flemish cities
De Lijn is giving away 100,000 digital tickets as a result of Mobility Week from 16 to 22 September. There will be a "park-and-ride" promotion with free tram and bus to the city center for those who park their car in Leuven, Ghent, Antwerp and Hasselt.
"I hope that in this way we will encourage many travelers to leave their car at home and try out public transport," says Flemish Minister of Mobility and Public Works Lydia Peeters.
De Lijn aims to give car commuters a taste of public transport: tram and bus. The free ticket can be requested via company's app or website. After registration, the traveler can claim the ticket and then activate it via the personal account. Each traveler can request a maximum of four tickets. They can save and use only one ticket for free in the virtual wallet. Only when that ticket has been used can a new one can be requested.
"De Lijn, together with its travelers, can make a very concrete and impactful contribution to the climate challenges," says Ann Schoubs, director-general of De Lijn. "Choosing public transport is a positive choice. This way we emit less CO2 and there are fewer traffic jams."
According to the public transport company, a bus replaces up to 30 cars.
Park and go
For the park-and-ride promotion, travelers who leave their car at one of the park-and-ride car parks in the four cities can take public transport to the city center for free. For this, the traveler has to send a unique code, which can be found at the participating car parks, to 4884. There is an additional 15 cents operator cost.
