Ministers order probe into DAZN’s Belgian football rights conduct

Belgium’s Economy minister David Clarinval and Consumer Protection minister Rob Beenders have asked the Economic Inspectorate to investigate DAZN over possible unfair commercial practices. The streaming platform currently holds the broadcast rights for Belgian football.
The ministers want inspectors to check whether DAZN’s recent communication to customers complies with consumer law, which bans misleading or unclear information about customer rights. They also want the company’s contract terms reviewed, particularly the rules for cancelling subscriptions, to ensure they do not create an unfair imbalance for consumers.
The move follows DAZN’s message to subscribers on Friday, issued after the company declared its long-term Pro League rights contract terminated. DAZN told customers it would offer a cheaper alternative or allow immediate cancellation if Pro League matches can no longer be shown this season.
Clarinval and Beenders now want clarity on whether that communication was misleading.
Last week, DAZN announced it had ended its multi-year, €84-million-per-season deal. The company said it had been unable to secure distribution partnerships with major telecoms operators. Although the contract is considered over, DAZN says it is willing to keep broadcasting matches under a new agreement to avoid disruption for fans.
