Minister president convenes Flemish government summit on Gaza for Friday evening

Flemish minister-president Matthias Diependaele (N-VA) has invited the core of the Flemish government to meet on Friday at 19:30, his office confirmed to Belga on Tuesday evening. Coalition partners CD&V and Vooruit have for some time been pressing for the government to speed up its review of the humanitarian situation in Gaza and to consider stricter measures against Israel. Until now, no early meeting had been planned, but the summit will now go ahead.
Following last week’s session of the Foreign Policy Committee in the Flemish Parliament, CD&V and Vooruit repeated their calls for a tougher stance towards Israel and an accelerated meeting of the Flemish government.
The Diependaele government was initially due to meet again on Friday, 5 September. However, a new committee meeting on Israel and Gaza is already scheduled for Tuesday, 2 September. CD&V and Vooruit want the Flemish government to present a stronger position on Israel ahead of that meeting.
On Monday, the two parties tabled a resolution without N-VA’s support, setting out a series of possible measures. The move was widely seen as an attempt to put pressure on N-VA.
Diependaele has now convened his government’s top leadership to address the issue on Friday evening. The core of the federal government will also meet on Wednesday to discuss the matter.
