Minister Crevits increases support for energy-efficient greenhouses in Flanders

The Flemish government is increasing its support for ornamental plant cultivation companies that invest in low-energy glasshouses. High energy prices have made the cultivation of flowers and plants very expensive.
The support for substantial investments is going up from 30 to 40 percent. For young farmers, the increase is from 40 to 50 percent. This was announced by Minister of Agriculture Hilde Crevits on Monday in Lochristi, East Flanders, during a company visit to Denis Plants.
During Minister Crevits' visit, the emphasis was also on innovation and measures that the water-intensive sector takes to reduce consumption. To minimise the effects of plant production on the environment, Denis Plants invested in the complete collection and reuse of rainwater. The company does not need to tap into any other water streams. Surface and groundwater are not impacted.
"We are allocating two million euros to help companies adapt to climate conditions," Minister Crevits said. "That means being adapted against far too much water, but also being prepared for far too little water."
The financial boost is a response to the summer drought that has caused damage in recent years. Finally, a new type of green façade was discussed, which can contribute to the greening of urban areas.
