Milei claims decisive midterm win in Argentina

Argentine president Javier Milei’s far-right La Libertad Avanza (LLA) party has secured a sweeping victory in Sunday’s parliamentary midterm elections, winning just over 40 per cent of the national vote with more than 97 per cent of ballots counted. The result marks a major endorsement of Milei’s reformist agenda and strengthens his position in Congress, though without granting him an outright majority.
According to tallies published by local media, LLA is expected to triple its representation in the lower house (from 37 to around 101 seats) and increase its Senate presence from six to 20 members. The party also claimed decisive victories in several key provinces, far exceeding analysts’ projections. The opposition Peronist coalition Fuerza Patria trailed with 31.6 per cent of the vote.
“A turning point” for Milei
“This is a turning point,” Milei told supporters in Buenos Aires on Sunday evening. He described the outcome as “the confirmation of the mandate we received in 2023” and pledged to “continue on the reformist path toward the construction of the great Argentina.”
The vote renewed 127 of the 257 lower-house seats and 24 of 72 Senate seats. Despite recent dips in popularity following economic troubles and a corruption scandal involving his sister, Milei’s party rebounded strongly from its disappointing provincial results in September.
US President Donald Trump, a close ideological ally, congratulated Milei on what he called a “landslide victory.” “Our confidence in him is justified by the Argentine people,” Trump said on his Truth Social platform. The US president had previously pledged 40 billion USD (34.5 billion euros) in aid to help stabilise Argentina’s struggling economy.
