Meta appeals €200 million EU fine over data practices

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is appealing a €200 million fine imposed by the European Commission for breaching the bloc’s Digital Markets Act (DMA).
The Commission ruled in April that Meta’s “pay or consent” model, that forces users to either pay to avoid personalised ads or accept data tracking, violated the new rules. It said the company failed to offer an equivalent, less-personalised version of its platforms.
Meta described the decision as “both incorrect and unlawful.” Vice president Tim Lamb argued the model was backed by a 2023 EU court ruling, which allowed subscription-based alternatives.
The Commission has also warned Meta of further daily penalties if it fails to comply. It is currently reviewing new information from the company to determine its current compliance status.
In a related case, Apple was fined €500 million for obstructing app developers from operating outside its App Store ecosystem.
