Member States and Parliament seal 2026 EU budget deal

The EU Member States and the European Parliament reached an agreement on the 2026 EU budget overnight. The budget for next year amounts to 192.8 billion euros, of which over 715 million euros is reserved to respond to unforeseen needs. A majority of Member States had requested this financial buffer.

In negotiations that lasted late into the night, the European Parliament managed to scrap several cuts proposed by the Member States. For example, the Member States wanted the 2026 budget to be no more than 186.2 billion euros. Parliament managed to add an additional 6.6 billion euros to this amount. This money is intended for defence spending, border management and strengthening competitiveness, among other things.

The provisional budget agreement is expected to be ratified by the Member States on 24 November. The European Parliament will vote on the provisional agreement in its plenary session at the end of November.
