Manneken Pis wears Superman costume for film release

On Wednesday, Brussels’ most famous statue, Manneken Pis, ventured into superhero territory by putting on a Superman costume to celebrate the release of James Gunn’s new Superman film.

Affectionately known as "Julien", the statue appeared in full superhero mode, with a red cape flowing and the signature "S" emblazoned on his chest. True to form, he was also spraying water with characteristic flair.

He saves the world, one wee at a time

"He ticks all the boxes," joked Marc Guebel, president of the Order of the Friends of Manneken Pis, during the unveiling. “He wears tights, he flies - well, not easily as a statue - and he saves the world, one wee at a time.” This is the 1,181st outfit in the statue’s extensive wardrobe, and it is part of a long-standing Brussels tradition whereby Manneken Pis is dressed for holidays, major events, and international celebrations.

Superman reboot

The costume coincides with the Belgian premiere of Superman (2025), the latest reboot of the DC Comics franchise. Directed by James Gunn, the film stars American actor David Corenswet as Clark Kent, offering a more introspective portrayal of the iconic character who remains committed to justice and compassion but now grapples with self-doubt and inner conflict. The film is showing in cinemas across Belgium from today.

In Brussels, the Manneken Pis tribute is more than just marketing. It's a tradition. Over the years, the statue has been dressed as a variety of figures, including Mozart, Nelson Mandela, astronauts, Red Devils players and nurses in PPE. By adding Superman to the mix, Brussels once again proves that it knows how to blend civic pride, humour, and popular culture.
