Man jailed for 10 years for repeatedly drugging and raping wife

A court in Hasselt has sentenced a man to 10 years in prison for drugging and raping his wife over a period of years. The 54-year-old is currently in custody but did not attend the sentencing hearing.
In civil proceedings, his now ex-wife has been awarded provisional damages of 15,000 euros, with an expert appointed to assess further damages. The civil proceedings will be reopened in October.
The man, from Zonhoven in Limburg, repeatedly drugged his wife by administering heavy sedatives in tea. While raping her with various objects, he took photographs and recorded videos. These were found on data carriers belonging to the suspect, who did not distribute the images. He was arrested by the investigating judge in early 2025.
“I think that the verdict as it stands now clearly shows that the suffering my client has endured has been recognised,” lawyer Luk Delbrouck told Belga. “The court recognises that suffering and also recognises that it went on for a very long time. I think it is a very appropriate punishment.”
