A 34-year-old suspect was killed during a police intervention in Namur on Sunday evening, the Namur public prosecutor's office reported on Monday. Several officers were injured during the incident.
Following reports from passers-by of a knife fight in Namur at around 22:00, four police teams arrived at the scene and found a vehicle blocked by a "very aggressive man", according to the public prosecutor's office.
When the officers attempted to arrest the "possibly armed" suspect, he hit them with an object which was later found to be his mobile phone, according to the office. Four officers were reportedly seriously injured.
The federal judicial police and the Comité P will determine whether the officers legally used their weapons
According to the office, three officers fired their weapons at the suspect after unsuccessfully attempting to subdue him with tear gas. They fired several shots at the suspect, who died after being hit by three bullets.
The case is now under investigation. The federal judicial police and the Comité P, which supervises the police, will determine whether the officers legally used their weapons.
The office added that a woman who was involved in the initial altercation that led to the intervention had been arrested and that a knife had been found on her person.
