Kopecky takes gold in points race at World Cycling Championships

Lotte Kopecky took gold in the points race at the World Cycling Championships in Glasgow, Scotland, on Tuesday night.
The 27-year-old Belgian finished the 100-lap, 25km track race with 39 points, ahead of Australian Georgia Baker on 31. Japan’s Tsuyaka Uchino was 25 points behind her in third. Britain’s Neah Evans, the outgoing world champion, appeared to be heading for bronze but had to settle for fifth with 9 points.
“In the end I just had to focus on Georgia, because she was six points behind, and as long as I stayed near her, it couldn’t go wrong,” Kopecky said after the race.
Kopecky had started as favourite, following her victory in the elimination competition on Sunday.
