Local artists take centre stage during Belgian Music Week

The first week of February is dedicated to Belgian music. From Monday to Sunday, Belgian Music Week puts local artists in the spotlight, on the radio in places such as care homes, the airport and football stadiums, and even by the police force. The MIAs, the Flemish music awards, will also be presented on Wednesday.
Belgian Music Week officially begins on Monday, but a first initiative took place on Sunday. Brussels hip-hop artist All-Turn warmed up supporters ahead of the football match between Royale Union Saint-Gilloise and Club Brugge. Musical activities are also planned around several football matches next weekend.
The week’s core focus remains live music. Concerts will take place in large venues as well as smaller clubs, record shops and alternative locations, including coffee bars and literary cafés. Live Belgian music can also be heard this week at Brussels Airport and on tram line 10 in Antwerp.
The carillon in Mol will play Belgian songs, while the Royal Antwerp Police Band, the house orchestra of the Antwerp police, will perform a daily cover of music by a Belgian artist. Several care homes are also organising their own initiatives, such as radio programmes featuring residents’ favourite songs.

Radio and television broadcasters are also giving extra attention to Belgian music. On Friday, Studio Brussel will announce the winner of the fourteenth edition of De Nieuwe Lichting, its annual talent competition. Wednesday see the presentation of the MIAs, the annual Flemish Music Industry Awards.
Belgian Music Week is organised by VI.BE, a support organisation for artists. An overview of all activities can be found on the official website.
