Liège-Bastogne-Liège: Julian Alaphilippe gives up after crash

Reigning world champion Julian Alaphilippe was forced to abandon Sunday's 108th edition of Liege-Bastogne-Liege, the final spring classic of the season, Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl confirmed.
At 62 kilometres from the finish, the Frenchman was involved in a massive crash on a descent. The first images show that Alaphilippe crashed into a tree a few meters off the track. The Frenchman was given first aid in an ambulance. He was reportedly conscious, able to move both legs and mainly suffering from pain in his back.
Alaphilippe will therefore not win La Doyenne this year either. He already finished second twice, in 2015 and 2021, and was once again Quick-Step team's trump card this year.
