Leuven will host upcoming edition of Open Monument Day

Leuven will host this year's edition of Open Monument Day on 8 September with the theme En Route!. The city announced this on Thursday at the town hall of Leuven.
"Leuven has a fantastic heritage," says Griet Langbeen, coordinator of the Open Monument Day at Herita, the company that organises the event. "Leuven also continues to draw attention to immovable heritage. That is why we chose the student city as the host city."
More than 120 organisers, such as local authorities, non-profit organisations and historical circles, met to envision an Open Monument day beyond the classic walking and cycling tours. New ideas included shining a light on funerary heritage and death, train heritage, the legacy of Romans in the Flemish regions and more.
Carl Devlies (CD&V), the alderman for immovable heritage in Leuven, is pleased with how the plans are unfolding and with the theme for this year. "We are also 'En route' with this town hall: it will be restored and repurposed in the coming years," he said. "The many students in the city are also 'En route' with us. We will also put the spotlight on St. James' Church, which has been closed for a long time but will be opened again in the future through a repurposing process. So we are completely 'En route!' in Leuven."
September will mark the 36th edition of Open Monument Day. The full program of Open Monument Day will be announced in mid-August.
