Leuven public prosecutor launches investigation into discredited gynaecologist

The Leuven public prosecutor's office has opened a judicial investigation into the Flemish gynaecologist who has come under heavy scrutiny in recent days. The announcement was made in a press release on Saturday.
According to the prosecutor’s office, one formal complaint has been filed with the police for violations of sexual integrity. "Victims can still file a criminal complaint with the police or the court. Each complaint will be recorded and followed up in cooperation with specialised police services," the statement said.
Over 150 reports
Dozens of women have spoken out in various media about alleged transgressive behaviour by the doctor. The Flemish hotline for transgressive behaviour has received more than 150 reports, prompting the opening of two extra phone lines to cope with the influx.
"We have never experienced this before," said Liesbeth Wyseur of the Flemish Justice and Enforcement Agency, which runs the hotline. "Even after the TV programmes on abuse in the church, we did not have to do this."

The doctor has been suspended by both RZ Tienen and UZ Antwerpen. The Doctors’ Association has also opened an investigation.
"Our client realises that the current reporting raises questions for many. He is hugely affected by it himself. He wants everything to be investigated thoroughly and honestly and will therefore cooperate fully with the inquiry," his lawyer said. "In addition, he is open to dialogue with anyone who might have felt uncomfortable."
