Leuven invests 35m euros in restoration city hall by 2029

The restoration and repurposing of Leuven's city hall will start on 1 October 2025. The work will take four years, with the reopening scheduled for 2029. The total cost will amount to 35 million euros, Leuven’s city council announced on Monday.
Leuven’s impressive Gothic city hall dates back to the 15th century. It took three architects and thirty years to build it. 235 statues were added to the facade after 1850.
The building will in the coming years undergo a thorough restoration, both inside and out. In recent months, facade statues have been wrapped and interior elements examined in preparation for the restoration. The interventions focus on sustainability, modern techniques and full accessibility.
One of the principal aims of the restoration is to make the building more accessible to the public. There will amongst others be a new entrance on Leuven’s Grote Markt, the city’s central square, in the future.
“It will be a place where you can really experience history, where the stories of the city are told, and where our residents can work together on the future of Leuven,” said Leuven’s mayor Mohamed Ridouani.
After the work is completed, the city hall will also once again be the venue for weddings, receptions and the city council meetings.
