Le Pain Quotidien plans to open 100 restaurants in India by 2034

Belgian restaurant chain Le Pain Quotidien has ambitious expansion plans for India, aiming to open 100 locations by 2034. The first branch will launch in Mumbai in April, with a second set to follow in September.
CEO Annick Van Overstraeten announced the initiative during a Belgian trade mission in India, calling the country “one of the fastest developing consumer markets in the world”.
Founded in 1990, Le Pain Quotidien specialises in bakery-style breakfast and lunch dishes such as salads, soups and sandwiches. The chain previously had a brief presence in India, but Van Overstraeten sees strong potential for success this time.
During the mission in Mumbai, she signed a partnership with Indian family-run company Bake&Brew, which will help drive the expansion. “They have hospitality experience and know the local market best,” she said. Financial details were not disclosed.
Combining flavours
The expansion will follow a city-by-city approach through franchising. “First Mumbai, then another city. This is the only way it is logistically feasible,” Van Overstraeten said.
The brand will target expats, tourists and the local middle class, with its locations offering 80 per cent of its classic menu and 20 per cent local adaptations, subject to approval from headquarters.
Le Pain Quotidien already operates in several European countries, as well as Japan, the US, the UAE and Latin American markets. “We are doing very well there,” Van Overstraeten said. “Later this year, we are also moving into Paraguay and Peru.”
