Large American aerial bomb from World War II found in Kortrijk
A large American aerial bomb from World War II has been found in Kortrijk, Flemish public broadcaster VRT reports. The area has been closed off and the bomb will be dismantled as soon as possible.
The bomb was found during excavation works near a shopping centre. It is believed to be an American type used during World War II and is 1m long with a diameter of 40cm.
The site was immediately closed off and all residents, shopkeepers and shoppers had to leave the area. DOVO, the Belgian army's demining service, was called to the site to dismantle the bomb.
Police spokesperson Thomas De Tavernier told VRT that it was not very exceptional for a bomb to be found in that location. “The station area was heavily bombed during World War II,” he said. “So it is not so exceptional for war ammunition to be found there, but this is a big one.”
