King Philippe honours 23 Belgians with noble titles and decorations

At the Royal Palace in Brussels on Tuesday, King Philippe and Queen Mathilde welcomed 23 Belgians who were awarded noble titles or state decorations in recognition of their exceptional dedication across a range of fields. The laureates were celebrated for their professional achievements, social engagement and contributions to Belgium’s national and international reputation.
Within the Order of the Crown, the King honoured pioneers in palliative care, leading figures in social and cultural initiatives and distinguished artists. Chantal Couvreur was appointed Commander for her groundbreaking work in palliative care, while Jacqueline De Montjoye was recognised for her long-standing involvement in social and cultural organisations. Painter Sam Dillemans also received the title of Commander for his internationally appreciated artistic career and for his donations to Belgian cities, including Ypres and Antwerp.

In the Order of Leopold, the title of Commander was awarded to several prominent figures. Catherine De Bolle, Director of Europol and former commissioner general of the Federal Police, was honoured for her leadership during and after the 2016 attacks and for her continued international commitment.
King Philippe also recognised entrepreneurs such as Loïc De Cannière, scientists including Arnaud Marchant, and humanitarians such as Saskia Van Uffelen, highlighting their impact on microfinance, vaccinology and digital accessibility, respectively.
Among the most notable honourees was Simon Gronowski, a 94-year-old Holocaust survivor, who received the rank of Grand Officer of the Order of the Crown. For decades, he has shared his testimony about the Shoah around the world, especially with younger generations. His recognition was met with the longest applause of the ceremony.

Baron Jan Huyghebaert, long-time chair of the Queen Elisabeth Competition and a key figure in promoting Belgian culture internationally, was also acknowledged.
Thirteen individuals were granted the personal noble title of Baron or Baroness, including diplomats, academics, entrepreneurs and cultural leaders. Among them were former ambassador Alexis Brouhns, science advocate Véronique Halloin, YouthStart co-founder Gaëtan Hannecart and art dealer and designer Axel Vervoordt.
Claire Tillekaerts, former CEO of Flanders Investment & Trade and chair of the Board of Directors of the National Bank since 2020, was honoured for her wide-ranging contribution to economic, cultural and social life. In 2016, she established the Aurore Ruyffelaere Fund in memory of her daughter, supporting projects focused on remembrance education.
Musical performances from violinist Adèle Ginestet and cellist Ye-Won Cho accompanied the ceremony.
With this annual ceremony, the royal couple reaffirms the importance of social engagement, cultural achievement, scientific progress and commitment to the common good, celebrating those who have made outstanding contributions to Belgian society.
