Kamiel Bonneu wins queen stage of Artic Race of Norway with impressive uphill attack
Kamiel Bonneu won the queen stage of the Arctic Race of Norway on Tuesday, in the first victory of the season for Bonneu and his team Flanders-Baloise.
The third and penultimate stage of the race, covering 155km between Tverlandet and Sulitjelma, was dominated for a long time by an early breakaway, including two Belgians, Gilles De Wilde and Louis Blouwe. They were caught in the tricky final part of the stage.
25-year-old Bonneu attacked on the 6.9km final climb of Jakobsbakken with the Italian Davide De Pretto. He won with a two-second lead ahead of the Dane Magnus Cort Nielsen and American Kevin Vermaerke.
Bonneu, a Limburger who spends most of the year in Catalonia, Spain, is a third-year pro and now has three professional victories. He previously won a stage in the Tour of the Czech Republic and the Tour of Great Britain in 2022.
In the overall classification of the Artic Race, Bonneu is one second short of taking the yellow leader's jersey from Cort Nielsen, who takes over the lead from his Norwegian teammate Alexander Kristoff.
The Arctic Race of Norway is a four-day race above the Arctic Circle. The stage race ends on Wednesday evening with a hilly stage, finishing on top of a 1.5km climb.
