Jean-Jacques Wondo released from prison in DRC

Belgian-Congolese military expert Jean-Jacques Wondo has been released from prison in the DRC and transported to the Belgian embassy in Kinshasa, his family has been told.
Wondo was sentenced to death in September along with some 30 other defendants by a military court in Kinshasa for his role in a failed coup in May. The military appeals court in Congo had upheld the death sentence on appeal last week.
Hundreds of academics and members of the legal profession in Belgium had called for the Belgian authorities to put pressure on the DRC to bring about his release, and the European Parliament had called for his sentence to be overturned.
