Jambon pays working visit to Wallonia to discuss Flemish labour shortage

Flemish minister-president Jan Jambon will travel to Namur on Wednesday to meet Walloon counterpart Elio Di Rupo. This is the first official working visit between the two regions since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The main topic of discussion will be the Flemish labour market. Flanders has unsuccessfully tried to solve this problem by attracting more job-seekers from Wallonia. More than 45,000 Walloons worked in Flanders in 2022, 10,000 more than in 2000.

The Flemish public employment service, VDAB, sent 117,000 job offers to its Walloon counterpart, Forem, last year. New initiatives to attract more people to Flanders will be announced on Wednesday.

The last working visit dates back to 2019. At the time, Jambon and Di Rupo discussed various topics, including Brexit and employment.
