Investigation under way after man dies on Brussels metro tracks

A man found on the metro tracks in Brussels on Thursday was fatally struck by a train, the Brussels public prosecutor’s office reports.
Shortly after 13.00, railway police were alerted when a body was discovered in the tunnel between Hôtel des Monnaies and Porte de Hal. The federal police laboratory, a forensic doctor and a magistrate attended to carry out investigations.
Initial findings released on Friday indicate an accidental death following a collision with a metro train, according to the public prosecutor’s office, but the exact circumstances remain unclear. Witnesses have been interviewed and steps are being taken to identify the victim.
“In the interests of the investigation, no further comments will be made at this stage,” the public prosecutor’s office added.
The accident led to the suspension of service on lines 2 and 6 between Trône and Gare du Midi for around five hours.
