Investigation launched into death of inmate in Ghent prison

The East Flanders public prosecutor's office has opened an investigation into the death of a 28-year-old inmate in the prison of Ghent, local media report.

The vulnerable person, Amah Ayité, had serious mental problems and was found in a comatose state by prison guards last Thursday. He was taken to hospital where he later died.

Originally from Togo, Ayité, a diabetic, had been ill for weeks. He refused to eat, was vomiting and would not take his medication. 

Prison guards reportedly raised concerns about his health on several occasions, but no action was taken, according to media reports.

The East Flanders public prosecutor's office confirmed that it had opened an investigation into Ayité's death. "A forensic doctor has been appointed," it said.

"At this stage, there is no indication of malicious intent or third-party involvement in the man's death. However, the investigation is still ongoing."
