Influential Belgian artist Octave Landuyt dies at 101
One of Belgium's most important artists, Octave Landuyt, has died at the age of 101. Landuyt, from Ghent, worked in many domains, including painting, sculpture, jewellery, interiors, sets and costumes for the opera.
He exhibited his work at home and abroad, and his pieces have been included in many major museum collections. His style is often surreal, with distorted human and animal figures.
Four of his works decorate the walls of the Porte de Namur metro station in Brussels. The large round pieces feature abnormal faces and hands that follow the themes of birth, love, adulthood and death.
"Since 2007, Octave Landuyt has proudly borne the title of honorary citizen of Destelbergen. He was not only a resident of our municipality, but also an inspiring example to many," the municipal authorities said in a press release. "We offer our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Octave Landuyt. We hope they can find comfort in the thought that his art and memories live on in the hearts of our residents."
