Health minister aims to save 907m euros in healthcare

Belgian Health minister Frank Vandenbroucke has sent a letter of intent to the National Institute for Health and Disability Insurance (NIHDI) for savings of 907 million euros, reported L'Echo. The NIHDI must present a series of ad hoc measures in early October ahead of the difficult budget talks that await the federal government.
The total includes measures worth 264 million euros that had already been decided, 275 million euros in additional efforts in the pharmaceutical budget, 25 million euros in the health insurance funds and 200 million euros in medical services and the organisation of hospitals. The government approved the text on 17 July.
The growth norm for 2026 is 2 per cent, which means that the healthcare budget will automatically increase by 1.546 billion euros to 41.579 billion euros. However, estimates have shown that this will not be sufficient, which is why 264 million euros in preventive measures had already been decided upon. Vandenbroucke expects that these will not be enough either.
