Handbiker Maxime Hordies wins World Championship gold in final race of career
Handbiker Maxime Hordies became world champion in the H1 road race at the World Cycling Championships in Zurich, Switzerland, on Thursday morning. The Belgian won a sprint for the gold medal in the final metres of the race.
Hordies was trailing Italian Fabrizio Cornegliani for most of the 38km race. But the 28-year-old was able to catch the Italian in the final lap and beat him in a sprint. Brazilian Marcos Ferreira de Melo Junior finished third more than 3 minutes later.
This is the second medal of this year's World Championships for Hordies, who won bronze in the H1 time trial on Tuesday. It is the Belgian's fourth world road title, following victories in 2019, 2022 and 2023, and his 10th world championship medal overall.
"There's no better way to finish," said Hordies, who has decided that this will be his final season as a handbiker. "I want to enjoy the time ahead with my family. I will definitely continue handbiking, but not at the highest level."
