Giro d'Italia: Remco Evenepoel crushes opposition in opening time trial
Remco Evenepoel won the opening time trial of the 106th Giro d'Italia Saturday. Wearing the Belgian tricolour, he blew away the competition.
Evenepoel covered the 19.6km between Fossacesia Marina and Ortona 22 seconds faster than Italian specialist Filippo Ganna. Portuguese Joao Almeida was third, 29 seconds behind. Slovenian Primoz Roglic, who had been tipped as Evenepoel's main rival for the overall win, finished sixth, 43 seconds behind.
On Sunday, Evenepoel, who rides for the Soudal-Quick-Step team, will start the second 201km stage from Teramo to San Salvo, wearing the pink leader's jersey. The first bunch sprint is expected there.
