Giant stuffed bull and a set of coffins: Opera Ballet Vlaanderen holds rare stock sale
Fans have been visiting the warehouse of Opera Ballet Vlaanderen as the opera house sells off its costumes, furniture and props.
“We mainly want to make room for new pieces,” says spokesperson Wilfried Eetezonne. “Some items will go today for as little as 1 euro. Others will be sold by auction.”
The warehouse in Zele, East Flanders, was the venue for the sale of items used in opera and ballet performances in Ghent and Antwerp. The company’s stock sale is a rare event, with the last one taking place before the pandemic.
Sales on Saturday were brisk, Eetezonne said. “Just now, someone left with a set of coffins, reportedly for a Halloween event. The chairs – more than 200 – are also very popular. Dance groups are interested in our costumes and there is a teacher who has bought masks for a school play.”

Some unique pieces, such as a rowing boat on wheels, have also been sold. The biggest item for sale is a stuffed bull, which served in the production Rumor. It will be sold by auction.
What will happen to the unsold pieces will be decided later. “In any case, we try to recycle as much as possible,” said Eetezonne. “That fits in with our sustainability policy.”
