'Gesture of the Year' in Flemish sign language to be announced on Saturday

The Flemish Sign Language Centre (VGTC) is calling on "sign language speakers and sign language lovers" to vote for the Gesture of the Year 2022. This year, they can choose from "jet lag", "Meta", "caramel", "podcast", or "northern lights" (aurora borealis, ed.). On Saturday evening, December 10th, VGTC will announce the winning Gesture of the Year.
VGTC, the knowledge and expertise centre relating to Flemish Sign Language, called on the sign language community in October and November to submit gestures that "were new, became popular (again), received a lot of attention or had a significant impact in the past year". The centre then selected the final five contenders.
In 2021, "Paralympics" was voted Gesture of the Year; in 2020, it was "corona". Through the campaign, which has existed since 2013, the knowledge centre aims to "encourage the sign language community to use language consciously and creatively".
The gestures for "jet lag", "Meta", "caramel", "podcast", or "northern lights" can be viewed on the VGTC's website. There, people can vote for a gesture of their choice until Saturday.
On Tuesday, dictionary publisher Van Dale shared the contenders for Word of the Year and Children's and Teen Word of the Year 2022. On December 20th, Van Dale will announce the winning words.
