Demonstrators protest against attack on Venezuela at US embassy in Brussels

More than 400 protesters demonstrated on Sunday at the US embassy in Brussels, on the initiative of organisations like Intal Globalize Solidarity and Vrede. They protested against the American attack on Venezuela, as well as against the “illegal kidnapping” of head of state Nicolas Maduro, who has arrived in the US with his wife, awaiting trial.
According to US president Donald Trump, Maduro is the head of a large drug cartel in Venezuela, but opponents believe Trump is using this as a pretext to secure the country's rich oil reserves.
Ludo De Brabander of Vrede, one of the protesters on Sunday, said “the American invasion is nothing more than a clear violation of international law”. “If one country can simply attack another, then the law of the jungle applies,” he added. “Trump is basically saying, ‘this is my hemisphere of the world, all the raw materials in the ground here are mine’.”
De Brabander also denounced the “kidnapping” of Maduro. According to him, Europe must condemn this in the strongest terms and urgently defend international law. “Belgium must also respond much more strongly," he said. "We cannot go back to the 19th century, but must let international law prevail.”
