Four arrested in anti-terrorist operation

Four people have been arrested as part of an anti-terrorist operation in Brussels, Ninove, Charleroi and Liège, RTBF reports. The one adult and three minors are suspected of preparing a terrorist attack, the federal public prosecutor’s office said on Sunday morning.

It is not clear exactly how concrete the plans for an attack were, “but they were concrete enough to intervene”, said spokesperson Eric Van Der Sypt. “In cases like that, we would rather act too early than too late.” The four people are being questioned and the investigating judge will later decide the next step.

The suspects were in contact with each other through a chat group. No weapons or explosives were found during the searches, but police seized laptops, mobile phones, computers and other items.

On Friday, the Coordination Unit for Threat Analysis reported a 41 per cent increase in reports of potential threats related to terrorism or extremism in Belgium last year, compared to 2022 levels.
