Former administrative centre to become Hasselt's new cultural hub

The former administrative centre of Hasselt will be converted into a cultural hub in the next few years. The Kunstenhuis Groenplein should open in 2027.
The centre has been deserted since 2018, when the new city hall was opened. Preparatory works to transform the building will take place in the coming weeks. The conversion of the building is expected to take two years and cost 15 million euros.
The façade and building will be preserved as much as possible and supplemented by a new section.
The existing section will house offices, changing rooms, the foyer and a café. The new part will be equipped with high-tech spaces and will accommodate a cinema, a theatre hall and rehearsal rooms. Ttheatre company Het nieuwstedelijk, Cinema ZED, B-Classic and Vonk will move into the art hub in 2027.
“When the doors open in 2027, Hasselt will have another huge cultural and tourist asset"
The Kunstenhuis Groenplein is intended to be a hotspot for film, theatre, performance and music and a place where artists can develop projects. “When the doors open in 2027, Hasselt will have another huge cultural and tourist asset,” said mayor Steven Vandeput.
The Groenplein square, just in front of the Hasselt building, will also be redesigned and made greener.
